"Here lies that famous Raphael by whom Nature feared to be conquered while he lived, and when he was dying, feared herself to die." (Inscription on Raphael's sarcophagus)

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known across the world simply by the name Raphael, stands as one of the main pillars of the High Renaissance, an iconic example of the balance between spirituality and humanistic inquiry that characterized the time period. Although he lived just 37 years, his career produced an amazingly rich output, and he completed more works than many artists do over careers spanning twice the length. At the same time, Raphael's art combined central tropes associated with the Renaissance while remaining remarkably original. As such, his career is worth exploring not only in its own right but also for the ways in which he typified contemporary artistic techniques, including a return to antiquity and the balance between mathematical accuracy, rational thought, and religious devotion.

While Raphael's own themes did not vary greatly throughout his career, he led a relatively nomadic existence, and his life reflects the trends associated with late 15th-century and early 16th-century Italy. Born in Umbria and raised in the Umbria court, Raphael was exposed to a wealth of artistic influences and high culture, characteristic of the early Renaissance shift toward humanism and artistic appreciation. Although Raphael's talent was generational, his life did not involve the extreme poverty and destitution that often characterized the lives of other famous artists.

The Life and Legacy of Raphael Legends of the Renaissance (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Todd Van Linda Books Reviews

The only Raphael I knew of before reading this book was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Oh, and the Angel Raphael. But it was past time for me to learn of this own.
I thought he was a contemporary of DaVinci and Michelangelo; he seems to have been a bit younger, and interested in women. He grew up in financial comfort, as his father was an artist of the Court Urbino.(There goes my spelling again.)
Raphael grew up under his father's tutelage and began helping his father at a young age. Dear old Dad recognized the talent in his son, but had no idea how far his son's work would pass his in quality, ability and acceptance.
This artist accomplished something DaVinci did not-he finished what he started. And he started a lot.
The book discusses the early death of his parents, the likely false statement of his apprenticeship.
And his early death.
But you have to see his final work. It goes beyond what a Renaissance painting is. It would have ushered in a new style of painting in Italy.
I wish I knew more about art. The only way to learn is read and study, right?
Appalling. The book appears to be an essay by a failed first year art history student. Riddled with errors and omissions - the first sentence gets Raphael's birth year wrong! The style is a child's attempt at 'literary' but simply moves heavily from cliche to cliche that, as the writer would no doubt say, 'is commensurate with a monumental lack of understanding for the time period'. This adolescent cut and paste from not-very-respected art historians shows little insight and less appreciation of the subject - no mention of Chigi, no mention of Giulio Romano, no mention of printmaking, a belief that the Cartoons actually ARE the tapestries they were designs for... I could go on forever. What is really galling is that I PAID (£2) for this tripe. It would have been bad value-for-money if it had been free! At least it has warned me off the "editors" who are willing to circulate this nonsense, to the detriment of true knowledge.
I can only assume that the favorable reviews here are from the poor author's parents - or people who thought they were going to read about mutant ninja turtles.
It gets one star because it isn't possible to give it a zero. Don't touch it or any other production of Charles River Editors.
This book seems meant for art history students. The information presented is interesting but I came away wanting more from this slim volume when I finished (in a single sitting) and it read like a textbook. I received this book free of charge through an eBook subscription, so I'm not complaining. Had I paid for it, I would be unhappy.
Found this book to be something that I was not really interested in. Did not finish it because it could not hold my attention. Maybe a personal thing
This biography of Renaissance era artist Raphael not only gives you his life story but also samples of his art to show how it evolved during his lifetime.
